PS A- it’s a cancer * preventing* procedure. When it’s time, get it done - it could save your life. And you’ll be asleep during it anyways.

The colonoscopy is easy. It’s the prep that sucks.

This is good advice.

They actually put me under when I got a vasectomy . My wife was disappointed when I woke up that I wasn’t all drugged up and saying weird things. She was looking forward to videoing it to use it as blackmail material . Unfortunately for her, w hen I woke up, it was like nothing had happened.

This is very true - but the prep isn’t painful, no cramps. It’s just... thorough.

My wife had one this fall, the doctor took me to a room to show me the photos, I was like why the hell do I want to see pictures of the inside of someone’s intestine?

Lol - in this case, my wife * did* the colonoscopy. Hopefully I didn’t say anything too dumb...

My wife * did* the colonoscopy. I have seen way more pictures of intestines and colons than I need to.

Yes, but all the poop in the preceding days... Ew. Hopefully, you’ll receive a clean bill of health.

I did thanks! My wife was a little disappointed I think- she did an  endoscopy too, and was thinking I had some upper issues that would allow her to tell me to cut back on the spicy stuff.

In this instance, I knew I was right (I have no symptoms). So bring on the spicy!!

The worst part was drinking the polyethylene glycol or whatever it was. I had to drink two bottles, so I just powered it down. And waited. Get a good book, or a few crossword puzzles, and be prepared to sit for a long time. But still, not that bad.

My appointment is in two weeks.  Not looking forward to the prep.

The stuff I took didn’t even have any bad taste - just mixed it with Gatorade and drank up.

I hid upstairs and played around unnecessary car shopping and reading Sludgo on BAT mostly. Easy peasy.

The prep isn’t fun, but the stuff I got had no flavor - just mix with a drink you like and drink up.

And yes, you’ ll spend a lot of time on the toilet- but I had no cramps or any other pain at all.

And you’re out for he procedure- wake up and you can start eating and drinking again.

I love heat , but this one is too extreme for me.

I do love habaneros though - I’ve grown them in the past.

I do not recommend it. Trader Joe’s has an excellent habañero sauce. And there’s no substitute for fresh Serrano, whether from the garden or from the store.

Been meaning to ask: are you a pilot?

Hmm - what’s the name of that TJ habanero sauce?

And yes, I have a pilots license - just single engine, instrument. But it’s been wayyyyyyyy too long since I’ve flown.

Here are the three things that got me through the gallon (!) of prep liquid. The drops worked great but were too sweet, hence the citric acid. Just avoid certain colors of liquids as per the instructions. I didn’t have any such restrictions for the colectomy, so I chose cherry Kool Aid drops for that prep.

I don't know where they went or what they did, but I seemed to some internal pain that made digesting mashed potatoes slightly painful. I was OK in a day or two.

I just did orange Gatorade - that color is not really recommended, but my wife okayed it.

I don’t like sweet drinks much, so that was enough for me - but the citric acid would have been a good call!

How are you feeling?

It’s possible, I guess - though you probably would have had that issue before the scope I suppose. But not now!

Almost back to normal. Minor pain and itchiness around the incision sites, not helped by the fact that I’m a scab picker (eww, TMI, I know...) After a couple of weeks on a low-residue diet I’m cleared to eat normally; I’m used to a high-fiber diet (diverticulosis) and I really missed my cruciferous vegetables, so much so that I ate almost an entire bag of broccoli that first night.

I still have to meet with an Oncologist to see if they want to do chemo, but I should be in the clear, although they’ll be watching me like a hawk for the next several years. The cancer didn’t spread to the lymph nodes, but there still may be some residual traces left in the abdominal cavity that they’d like to eradicate before they cause any problems. But it sounds like I can plan on a (hopefully long)  lifetime of frequent colonoscopies, so I'd better get the prep routine dialed in to make it as simple as possible.

Good news! And yeah, you’ll get used to that prep.

Hopefully you can skip the chemo - that’s not fun - but if it’s needed, it’s needed.

They were talking about some rather well-tolerated chemo, just a few pills, instead of the IV kind where you get sick and lose your hair. If it means preventing a recurrence of the cancer I’d take either kind.

Kinja'd!!! WilliamsSW > Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

Even better. I have at least 3 family members who have been through the IV chemo plus a couple of other people I know - it’s not pleasant, but they’re all happy and healthy now.

I read the headline as “screaming colonoscopy.”

Aren’t they supposed to sedate and lube you up?

LOL I would be screaming without lube and sedation.

But no, you get sedated and they do use lube.
